Former EPA Head Blames NYC for Dust Sickness
September 8, 2006 - 3:41pm
Just days after a major health study confirmed widespread lung damage among WTC responders, former Environmental Protection Agency head Christie Whitman told 60 Minutes that she never misinformed New Yorkers about 9/11 air pollution. Her reassurances that the air was safe immediately after the terror attacks were made in reference to all of lower Manhattan, not Ground Zero, she said. “There we always said consistently, ‘Got to wear protective gear’,” said Whitman. The city was responsible for protecting New Yorkers, she said. Congressman Jerrold Nadler accused Whitman of trying to rewrite history: "She was lying then and she's lying now," he said in a statement.—Mike McPhate
