New Yorkers Remember Tragic Day

New Yorkers marked the fifth anniversary of the World Trade Center attacks with a tearful tribute at Ground Zero. Friends and family of some of the nearly 3,000 victims of 9/11 gathered early Monday morning and read out the names of everyone who died at the site. Even subway trains hushed as moments of silence were observed across the city at 8:46, 9:03, 9:59 and 10:29 a.m, marking the impact of the planes and the collapse of the towers. The Port Authority planned an afternoon ceremony at St. Peter’s church. President George Bush and wife Laura attended an early breakfast with Manhattan first responders, while Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld attended a ceremony at the Pentagon. Bush planned to pay tribute later at the Pentagon and Shanksville, Pennsylvania, site of the United 93 crash. He planned to deliver an evening speech to the nation from the Oval Office. The "Tribute in Light" was scheduled to illuminate the night sky at Ground Zero from sunset to sunrise.—Mike McPhate
