Unidentified Odor Stalls Morning Commute
January 8, 2007 - 1:06pm
In a press conference this morning, Mayor Michael Bloomberg responded to reports of a natural gas-like odor throughout the city. Though some office buildings had been evacuated and service was interrupted on PATH trains and F subway lines, the mayor said the widespread smell was not believed to be dangerous. Train service has since returned to normal.
The strong odor was reported from the Battery to Upper Manhattan as well as in parts of New Jersey. The mayor said that while a gas leak was reported at a Greenwich Village construction site, it was too small to spread throughout the city in such a concentrated amount.
