Over winter break I went to see the Grand Canyon in Arizona. At first, before I went, I refused to go because I thought it wouldn’t be any fun. But, when I got there I was astonished by the beauty and when I looked down into the canyon, I felt like I could see to the bottom of the earth. It felt as if I was going to freeze to death because the weather was bitterly cold and there was ice on the ground. It was so cold that icicles were dripping from the rocks. However, the instant I looked into the canyon, I no longer cared about the temperature.

At Kids of Summer Sports Camp, experienced coaches encourage healthy competition among campers as they take part in baseball and basketball programs. The campers, ages 6 to 14, learn and practice the sports in a supportive, small group environment. Kicking off its eleventh year, the co-ed camp will offer sessions from June 18 to August 31. The camp runs Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and offers a late pick-up option. Round-trip transportation is also available to the camp’s location at the home fields on 106th Street in Riverside Park. From now until March 1, take advantage of the early registration discount. Discounts are available for both sibling and multiple-week registration, although one-week sessions are available.

Long gone are the days of the typical summer camp experience. In some cases, computers are the new campfires and college dormitories are the cabins. Adventure, academic, sports, performing arts – the list of summer camp categories to choose from seems endless. And while the kids are the ones who actually participate in the activities, parents are still responsible for selecting a camp to best suit the needs and interests of their children.

The most famous skater in the world is 40 years old and he just welcomed his fourth child. He’s been retired from competition skateboarding for nine years. It’s easy to imagine that at this point Tony Hawk would have faded into the abyss, hardly seen and rarely heard from. Yet, his presence has never been more known. Since he first stepped on a skateboard 32 years ago, Hawk has risen from obscurity to illustriousness, crossing over from skater hooligan to business mogul. Many consider him to be the greatest skater alive. But for Hawk, he’s still that same kid that fell in love with skating three decades ago. And with age, comes wisdom, and new motives for his involvement with the sport. His focus is no longer aimed at winning competitions but rather on raising money for his namesake foundation to help kids.

High-tech sports marketers now aiming at the 7-year-old bound for the NFL
By Danielle Shapiro
Six floors up a Midtown Manhattan high-rise is not, perhaps, the most obvious place to find athletes training with high-tech video analysis equipment, a 30-yard track and bright green practice turf (white football lines and all). Nor does it seem to be the place where the athletes would be as young as 8 or 9 years old. But at the Velocity Sports Performance facility on East 58th Street, weekday afternoons are abuzz with kid-infused activity.
